About

A quiet place to read, write and talk.

Daahqaad is an app for Somali stories, poetry and live conversation. This page is about where it came from, what it does, and who makes it.

The story

Somali writing had nowhere to live online.

Somali culture travels by voice: poems recited from memory, stories told after dark. When it moved online, it landed in feeds built for something else.

A good essay would sit between a dance clip and an argument, and be gone within the hour. Writers who put real work into a piece watched it lose to whatever was loudest. Readers who wanted something worth their time could not find it.

Daahqaad started in 2026 to give that writing a home: a place where a piece is read as it was written, by people who chose to follow the writer.

The name is Somali. Daaha ka qaad means "lift the veil."

What it is

One app, four things to do in it.

On iPhone, on the web, and soon on Android.

Write

Stories, essays and short posts, with an editor made for long pieces and a page that looks like a page.

Read

Your home shows the writers you follow, in order. Poetry gets proper line breaks. Nothing is ranked for you.

Talk

Live audio rooms and podcasts. Listeners raise a hand to speak. Rooms can be open, or private with a door code.

Listen

Any story can be read aloud in Somali or English, so it travels to the kitchen, the bus, and people who prefer to listen.

What is different

Built to be put down.

Most apps are designed to keep you scrolling. Daahqaad leaves a few things out on purpose.

  • No algorithm decides what you see
  • No reels, no autoplay
  • No advertising
  • No infinite feed
  • Somali and English side by side
  • Readers support writers directly
